TECHNOLOGIES

Students are empowered through the use of technology to become innovative and creative thinkers. As digital citizens, they understand their responsibility to make a positive impact in an ever-changing world.

Whitford Catholic Primary School adopts a 1:1 iPad program from Year 3 – 6 and shared devices from PK- Year 2, to facilitate the teaching of Technologies. This approach is complemented by an integrated teaching of general capabilities alongside the Technologies curriculum, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive education that equips them with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the modern world.

General Capabilities:

General capabilities are the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that young Australians need to be successful in the 21st century. These capabilities are not taught as a separate subject but are integrated across all learning areas.

At Whitford Catholic Primary School, teachers use a Scope and Sequence to guide the teaching of digital literacy skills to students at all grade levels. This helps ensure that students are developing the skills they need to be digitally literate as they progress through their learning.

Technologies Curriculum:

The Technologies curriculum is taught in a designated time. The Western Australian Curriculum has two different subjects called Design and Technologies, and Digital Technologies.

  • In Design and Technologies, students use creative thinking and technology to come up with solutions for real-life problems. They learn how to make things that are useful and meet people’s needs.
  • In Digital Technologies, students learn how to use technology to solve problems. They use a special way of thinking called computational thinking to design and create solutions.

Both Design and Technologies, and Digital Technologies are taught through two main areas:

  • Knowledge and understanding: where students learn about the concepts and theories behind design and digital technologies.
  • Processes and production skills: where students learn how to apply their knowledge and create actual solutions using technology and design thinking.

Please note that all second hand devices will need to be wiped to be setup on the school management system. If there is data (photos, videos etc.) on the device that families would like to keep, then we recommend that iPads are backed up prior to enrolment.

Other items that need to be considered prior to the enrolment of your device include the following:

  • Sign out of Apple ID (you can sign back in after the enrolment)
  • Remove any passcode off the device (you can set it back up after the enrolment)

Managing screen time – Digital Balance
There are many third-party providers for parental controls on the market. Not all will work with JamF. Two options have been provided below: 1 for parents with an IOS (Apple) device and 1 for parents with an Android device.

IOS (Apple) Users: Family Sharing
Family Sharing allows users to set screen time restrictions and approve what children download and can buy. It will also allow you to place blocks on websites that you do not approve of.

To learn how to set up Family Sharing using your iOS device please click on the link below:

Android Users:
For parents that do not have an Apple device the alternative is to use JamF Parent (Apple Users can also use this if they wish). This will work in much the same way as Family Sharing.

For more information on setting this up please click on the following link:

On this website there will be video tutorials that will help you to set up your restrictions and device rules. It is recommended that you start at the ‘Getting Started’ tab and work your way through.

School Management System and Process

All devices in the school will be enrolled in JamF as per our ICT Policy. JamF allows the school to manage the devices remotely. Put simply, the school can send out applications and place blocks on applications throughout the school day.

This allows teachers to remain focused on what they need to be doing in class, without the worry of students playing their games from home. It is important to remember that the iPad is considered an educational tool and should be used as such.

JamF does not allow us to see what is stored on the device I.e., Photos and videos. It will only allow us to control what applications are visible during school hours. It will also allow the administrator to reset passcodes (provided they are still connected to the Internet) and set up our photocopiers for the students, whilst also providing automatic connection to the school Wi-Fi using their CEWA credentials.
