Music at Whitford Catholic Primary School

Music is a joyful part of life at Whitford Catholic Primary School. It brings our students, staff, and families together in celebration, creativity, and shared expression. Through our specialist-led music program, students from Kindy to Year 6 become performers, makers, and explorers of music. Whether they’re singing, moving, composing, or playing instruments, every child is encouraged to develop their musical confidence in a way that supports their academic, spiritual, and emotional growth.

In the Music Room

Each class attends a music lesson once a week for a semester during the year. These hands-on and engaging sessions nurture a love of music through play, discovery, and collaboration. Our well-equipped music room includes a full classroom set of xylophones, a drum kit, recorders, and a wide variety of percussion instruments. Students also enjoy using iPads and GarageBand to compose and explore music digitally.

In Years 3 and 4, students learn to play the recorder using a fun, karate belt–style system, earning coloured belts as they progress through increasingly complex pieces. In Years 5 and 6, students follow a similar system on the ukulele. These instrumental programs lay a strong foundation for future music learning, both in and beyond primary school, and support pathways into brass, woodwind, percussion, strings, and contemporary music.

Faith Through Music

Each week, students come together to learn music for liturgies and special celebrations. Music is an important part of our Catholic identity, and students are encouraged to lift their voices in praise, reflection, and unity as they prepare to lead our school and parish in song.

Choir Opportunities

Music is something to be shared, and our choirs do just that!

  • The Tiny Trebles Choir (Pre-Primary to Year 2) meets on Monday mornings before school. It’s a fun and relaxed space where our youngest singers learn to perform together at school events throughout the year.
  • The Senior Choir (Years 3–6) rehearses on Friday mornings and sings at major school events and community festivals—no audition needed, just a love of singing!
  • The Cantando Choir, our liturgical choir (Years 3/4–6), rehearses during school time in Terms 1 and 2. This group supports the prayer life of our school by leading music at Masses and faith-based gatherings, both at school and in the wider parish community.

Private Music Lessons

Through Keyed Up Music, students can enrol in after-school lessons in keyboard or guitar. These small-group sessions are a great way to develop skills and confidence in a supportive setting.

Celebrating Musical Growth

We love celebrating the musical growth of our students, and there are many opportunities to do so!

  • The Senior Music Concert is held at the end of Semester 1, where students in Years 3–6 showcase their progress in recorder, ukulele, and ensemble work. It’s a beautiful opportunity for families to see and hear how far their children have come.
  • The Junior Music Concert takes place at the end of Semester 2 and features our Kindy to Year 2 students in a joyful, Christmas-themed celebration of singing and movement. It’s always a heart-warming highlight of the year.

These concerts aren’t just about performance, they’re about community, confidence, and the joy of learning something together.

Beyond the Classroom

Our music program connects students to the wider community through exciting performance opportunities:

  • Catholic Performing Arts Festival (Years 4–6): Students can represent the school by performing solo or in small ensembles on instruments such as woodwind, brass, strings, percussion, and contemporary instruments like guitar, keyboard, and voice. It’s a supportive and enriching experience for our young musicians to grow and shine.
  • One Big Voice Festival (Senior Choir, Years 3–6): Held annually at RAC Arena, this uplifting event brings together thousands of students from across WA to sing as one. It’s an unforgettable experience that builds confidence, pride, and unity through song.

Students also regularly share their music at assemblies, liturgies, and community events, helping to strengthen the ties between our school, parish, and families.

Music for Life

At Whitford Catholic Primary School, we believe music is more than a subject, it’s a way to grow in confidence, build friendships, express identity, and bring joy to others. Whether your child is humming a tune in Kindy, strumming a ukulele in Year 5, or standing proudly with 700 other choir students at One Big Voice, every musical moment is a step in a lifelong journey of creativity, connection, and celebration.

We are so proud of our students and the role music plays in shaping a vibrant, faith-filled, and inclusive school community.
