There’s a new face at #WhitfordCatholic. Let’s start to get to know our new Principal, Mark Marando…

My wife, Debbie-Jo is a high school teacher and we have two daughters, Olive and April. I enjoy taking the boat out and getting to the beach, travelling around WA and spending time with family and friends.

I have grown up and lived in Perth for most of my life and have also lived in Merredin in the wheatbelt for three and a half years.

I have been in Catholic Education for the last 23 years. I have worked at John XXIII College, Liwara CPS, Holy Name School, Notre Dame CPS, St Mary’s School in Merredin, St Anthony’s School and now Whitford Catholic Primary School.

I am in my eleventh year of principalship and am grateful for the opportunity to work in partnership with our community to provide excellent experiences and outcomes for our students, staff and families.

Like so many events, our #AshWednesday celebration

Like so many events, our #AshWednesday celebrations looked a little different this year, with students taking part in a #liturgy in their classrooms instead of the church and ashes being sprinkled on heads instead of the traditional ash cross.
But even with these changes, our understanding of the importance of Ash Wednesday has not diminished.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of #Lent and serves as a reminder that we do not always follow God’s ways and need to ask God for His mercy and forgiveness. We wear ashes to show that we want to turn away from whatever keeps us from God, and to have a change of heart, so that we can live in right relationship with God and each other.

For Catholics, Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting and abstaining from meat. Fasting reminds us that food alone cannot make us happy. We must also be fed with prayer, with God’s Word and by meeting Jesus in the Sacraments, especially Reconciliation and Eucharist. The small sacrifices we make during Lent make room in our hearts to welcome the risen Jesus at #Easter.

School is going to look a little different from Mo

School is going to look a little different from Monday, most notably with teachers and visitors wearing #masks. So to help the younger and more nervous members of the #WhitfordCatholic community, we’re sharing these slides and tips below:

• Sit with your child in front of a mirror. Let them practice holding the mask in front of their face. When they take it down, say something like ‘Look, it’s still you’

• Practice seeing and feeling smiling eyes. Put your fingers on your cheekbones and feel how they move when you smile. Help the children to do the same. Help children look in a mirror and see how their eyes change when they smile.

• Play ‘feelings charade’. See how many emotions children can identify with a mask on. Sad? Surprised? Happy? Worried?

The start of the school year is an exciting time f

The start of the school year is an exciting time for children and parents, but it can also be challenging. Whether your child is starting school for the first time, coming to #WhitfordCatholic for the first time, or returning for a new year, there are a few things that can help their school year start smoothly:

Transition – Children are often nervous about the unknown which is why all WCPS students had the opportunity for a transition session where they met their classroom teacher, visited their new classroom and played with their new classmates. Chatting about this session can help calm the nerves. And remember, it is completely normal to feel nervous and, most likely, everyone in their class will be feeling the same way.

Be on Time - It is important to be on time for the start of the school day. Rushing and being late can increase your child’s apprehension and worry. Prepare as much as you can the night before.

Practice Makes Perfect – Younger children may benefit from practicing skills such as opening and closing their lunchbox, opening their water bottle, putting shoes on and adjusting clothes when using the toilet. You may even want to practice your new before-school routine with your child.

Positivity - Talk positively with your child about starting school, making new friends, and doing new things. Talk about your positive memories of school; your first day, favourite teacher, or favourite things you did.

If Your Child Becomes Upset - Please be assured that our teachers very skilled at helping children who get upset at drop off. Have a “goodbye” routine with your child such as: kiss, hug, and say “I’ll pick you up at the end of the day”. Try not to drag out the goodbye as this can make it harder.

And Don’t Forget -
The first day of school can be emotional for parents too! Think about how you will manage your own emotions on the day. Plan something nice for yourself after you have dropped your child at school.

We are so fortunate that our Year 5 students were able to go on their camp earlier this term. Through a structured program of fun activities, students learn to build confidence, ignite creativity and problem-solving, stimulate a sense of adventure, encourage social interaction and team-building, and promote independence.
Both our Year 5 and Year 6 camps are a big part of growing up at Whitford Catholic and are fantastic opportunities for children make memories and friendships that last a lifetime.
