1:1 iPAD PROGRAM

Whitford Catholic Primary School has been operating a 1:1 iPad Program for Years 3 – 6 since 2016. Within our Junior classes, a bank of iPads is provided by the school, with a ratio of 1 iPad per 2 students. The Upper Primary 1:1 program was implemented following research into best pedagogical practices.

We believe that incorporating Digital Technologies throughout the entire curriculum encourages students of all abilities to thrive and showcase their learning in a variety of ways. At Whitford Catholic Primary School, we pride ourselves on being a future-focused school with 21st Century Learning, whilst the program encourages students to collaborate, create, and investigate.

Our teachers are fully equipped in teaching iPads in a 1:1 environment, and we are proud of their achievements in transforming learning. The iPad program allows for teachers to make more personalized learning tasks, as we believe each child should has the opportunity to showcase their learning in a variety of ways.

The students are regularly taught how to remain safe online, with both teachers and external visitors combining to teach students about digital citizenship. These curriculum practices, along with our school device management system, JamF, allows all students to feel safe and connected whilst working in an online environment.

1:1 iPAD PROGRAM – FAQs

Can I use a secondhand device?

Yes, you can use a secondhand device if it meets the minimum specifications to run the latest iOS software.

To view if your iPad is compatible with the latest software, please click on the following link or refer to the PowerPoint on this webpage:

https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/ipad/ipad213a25b2/ipados

Please note that all secondhand devices will need to be wiped to be setup on the school management system. If there is data (photos, videos etc.) on the device that families would like to keep, then we recommend that iPads are backed up prior to enrolment.

Other items that need to be considered prior to the enrolment of your device include the following:

  • Sign out of Apple ID (you can sign back in after the enrolment)
  • Remove any passcode off the device (you can set it back up after the enrolment)

Where can I purchase the iPad from?

You may purchase your iPad from any retailer that sells the device. Alternatively, we provide a purchase option through JB HiFi. JB HiFi occasionally offer educational discounts for iPads.

In Term 4, a parent portal will be opened through JB HiFi (available for any parent of the school) to be able to purchase a device and any other optional extra.

You will be provided with a school code in Term 4 to purchase the device.

Managing screen time – Digital Balance

There are many third-party providers for parental controls on the market. Not all will work with JamF. Two options have been provided below: 1 for parents with an IOS (Apple) device and 1 for parents with an Android device.

IOS (Apple) Users: Family Sharing

Family Sharing allows users to set screen time restrictions and approve what children download and can buy. It will also allow you to place blocks on websites that you do not approve of.

To learn how to set up Family Sharing using your iOS device please click on the link below:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201088

Android Users: For parents that do not have an Apple device the alternative is to use JamF Parent (Apple Users can also use this if they wish). This will work in much the same way as Family Sharing.

For more information on setting this up please click on the following link:

https://docs.jamf.com/jamf-parent/guide-for-parents/index.html

On this website there will be video tutorials that will help you to set up your restrictions and device rules. It is recommended that you start at the ‘Getting Started’ tab and work your way through.

School Management System and Process

All devices in the school will be enrolled in JamF as per our ICT Policy. JamF allows the school to manage the devices remotely. Put simply, the school can send out applications and place blocks on applications throughout the school day.

This allows teachers to remain focused on what they need to be doing in class, without the worry of students playing their games from home. It is important to remember that the iPad is considered an educational tool and should be used as such.

JamF does not allow us to see what is stored on the device I.e., Photos and videos. It will only allow us to control what applications are visible during school hours. It will also allow the administrator to reset passcodes (provided they are still connected to the Internet) and set up our photocopiers for the students, whilst also providing automatic connection to the school Wi-Fi using their CEWA credentials.
